Red Oak

Approximately 5,300 people live in Red Oak, the county seat of Montgomery County, Iowa.  A one hour drive southeast of Omaha/Council Bluffs, it is an attractive city with a vibrant main street and many charming, well maintained homes that were built in the late 1800’S and early 1900’s.  These homes reflect the growth in population, the wealth, and the expanding economy of that period.  Much of this activity was the result of the railroad’s arrival in 1869.  Red Oak’s position as the trade center of the area has remained steady and has made this a self sustaining, popular place to live.

Red Oak’s award winning school system has four separate entities—a Primary School (PK-3), an Intermediate School (4-5), a Middle School (6-8), and a High School (9-12).  The school system also operates Right Start Pre-School, the Alternative High School, and the Red Oak Technology Center, a consortium of area colleges which hold classes at the high school.  Southwest Community College also has a campus here.

Montgomery County Hospital provides the city and surrounding area with many in-patient and out- patient services.  These include hospitalization and emergency care, physical therapy and cardiac rehab, educational classes, and offices for a family physician, an internist, and a general surgeon.  Board certified physicians from larger cities rotate into a clinic for diagnosis and treatment in specific areas.

There are 10 churches in the city, a library and beautiful fine arts venues for concerts and art displays and classes. There are also numerous recreation and fitness facilities, including a YMCA , thirteen parks with ball diamonds, a swimming pool, trails and picnic facilities, a movie theater, a country club with an 18 hole golf course, pool, tennis courts, and full service restaurant.  Community activities include: Taste of Summer,  Junction  Days,   Heritage Hall Tour, a Farm Show, an Agricultural Business Appreciation Breakfast, and a Farmer’s Market from May to October.

Red Oak is truly a place where yesterday, today and tomorrow are honored and enjoyed.
